Makeup Revolution Ultra Cream Contour Palette Review

Contour, a technique which is used to darken parts of the face to give it a shadowy effect to lessen the prominence of the said feature and define the face structure, is much beloved indeed. Some would give credits to the like of Kim Kardashian for "hyping" contour and bringing a lot more attention to the technique. In 2015, contouring was amongst the biggest makeup trend of the year.

In reality, contouring has existed long before makeup brands take on contouring as the "next big thing" to mass produce. I still remember that the make up artist who did my makeup for my middle-school "prom" back in 2011 used this very technique on me.

Today contouring is definitely no longer exclusive to the professional makeup artists. Rather, the question almost becomes who doesn't know how to contour? Be it high end or drugstore, there are a plethora of choices for everyone to try their hand at contouring.

Truth be told, I learned all of my makeup "skills" from beauty youtubers. Until about the end of last year, I shied away from anything more than basic because I have next to no clue how to do a full on makeup look. But I decided it was time to try something new, hence when I saw a sale on this product in my local drugstore, I bit the bullet and buy one for myself.

Makeup Revolution is a UK-based brand which is sold exclusively at Rossmann in Germany. They are known to have products with low prices but quite a nice quality. I have heard some of the british youtubers mentioned the brand, so I thought I might give it a go.

The Makeup Revolution Ultra Cream Contour Palette retails for €11,49. For a whole palette of product, I think its price is more than reasonable; besides, the packaging are not at all cheap looking or a horrible quality. In fact, the mirror that is included is quite nice.

Unfortunately, there appears to be only one set of colours that is available for the products. If you have a very light skin or a dark one, I would not think that this palette would work for you. There might be some colours you may be able to work with, but certainly not all.

The product is described to contain six contour shades and two highlighters. I believe that the lighter contouring shades are meant to lighten the skin, or even work as a concealer to some degree, because I don't think that the lighter shades are suitable contour shades.

Overall, I thought the majority of the shades are very creamy and workable. They are highly pigmented and they would last all day. If you work with the darker shades, there is some tendency of the colour ending up "muddy", but with a little patience for blending, it would work. Further on, I would give my thoughts on the specific shades.

Top row, right to left

The top row of products contain the two highlighters and two other colour that I wouldn't really call contour shades. If anything, they look like they might work as colour correctors or concealer on suitable skin tones. I also have a hard time determining which the second highlighter shade is. The first one is obvious enough, being the only one that contains glitter, but I have no clue which is supposed to be the second one. Aside from the obvious highlighter, I have never tried to use the other shades in this row, if only because they are not my colour.

However, the one shade I did try in this row is also a very disappointing one. While all of the other shades are very creamy and even, this particular shade is nothing like the others. It is extremely patchy, and when you work with a glittery cream product, it is very plain to see. Even on my swatch above there is literal chunk of product in the middle of the swatch to be seen. I find that it is almost impossible to work with. What's more, I found the colour to be far too icy in contrast to the other shades in this palette, which are quite warm.

Bottom row : left to right
I have found that I am able to work with the bottom row of products a lot more than the top one. Mainly because the actual darker shades of contour are here. Nonetheless, I still have some misgivings about the shades. The one on the furthest right is actually my perfect concealer shade. When I need a stronger coverage, I would use it as such, because I don't have a cream concealer anyway. I do think that it could work as a concealer, because it is pigmented and it does last a long time. If you are lucky enough to have a shade in the palette that perfectly matches your skin, I would recommend trying the product as concealer.

To be honest, I am having a hard discerning the shade on the far left and the second shade from the right. They are quite similar, though I suppose the one on the right is a little bit darker. It is also the one I use as my contour shade. Both of the shades are very warm indeed, so there is a possibility for them to become "muddy". I like to blend my contour as much as possible, because a streak of brown on my face is something I would like to avoid.

I have yet to use the second shade from the left, because it ended up causing my skin to look ashy. It is quite a cool toned shade, especially against the two very warm shades on its sides. I suppose the colour might work for someone who is a lot more fair skinned that I am and have a pink undertone.

All in all, I this palette is worth trying out , especially if you're only beginning to familiarise yourself with contouring. The one caveat would be that your skin tone has to be able to work with the palette, in which there are more shades than one that you can use.

xo,
Maria
